PostSubject: A big day for a little Jawa.   A big day for a little Jawa. I_icon_minitimeSun Feb 19, 2012 11:58 am

He was not like the other Younglings; a fact that was readily apparent on this day, of all days. He seemed immune to the commotion that was spreading around him, the sounds and sights of the final few days of being a Youngling. It was a coming of age, for the young Jedi; their chance to give the right impression to older Jedi, and become a Padawan. Displays of lightsaber styles, intellect, wit and physical prowess were abound in the temple.

Tinki sat apart from it all. His little feet dangled off of the edge of the table he sat upon, their fur rippling as they rocked in the breeze. His golden eyes peered out from under the brim of his wide hat, peering at the small, spherical device in his small hands. Quick, agile fingers danced over the small machine, performing small modifications and adjustments. It was a project he had been working on for several months now, and as it was coming to completion, he felt more and more driven to see it finished.

With a short sigh, and a graceful flick of his wrist, the young Jawa made the machine disappear up one of his sleeves. One did not work well on an empty stomach, and that gnawing sensation in his belly was beginning to grow. As much as he did not want to take a break, he knew his body well enough to be certain it was for the best. He slipped off of the table smoothly, landing on his feet and weaving through the other Younglings as he made his way towards the canteen. So much to do, and so little time.

“I didn’t order this!”
“Don’t bother - the droids defective.”
“Well someone should fix him…”

Senna felt a smile tugging at her lips as she watched the two padawans speaking to one another, obviously one of them was new to the temple, seeing he didn’t know about the canteens service droids unique character. How many times had she had the same conversation with her friends when she was training here? How many times did Kel try to ‘trick’ the droid into giving him the right food, or she absentmindedly asked for it just to surprise her only to have to jump up and yell BOO! How many meals had they passed off to their wookie friend when they gave up knowing he would happily devour it despite the colour, texture or taste?

She watched the pair sit down with other padawans and start to laugh jovially. Senna lowered her eyes back to her own meal, smiling wistfully still – there were times she missed being here with her friends. Of course they had complained from time to time about how hard it was, how their Master’s must be expecting the impossible and other such complaints only the young could have… Her eyes flicked up as this time a group of younglings rushed past her table, she wondered where the others roamed now and if they, at times, like her missed the simpler times they all shared at the temple.

Senna poked her food idly with her fork and wondered if other Jedi Knights were like her, if they seemed to have trouble letting go. Sure, she did wander the galaxy with the intention of expanding her horizons but somehow inexplicably she always returned to Coruscant whether by design or chance, she was always drawn back to this place she called home. Her old Master assured her there was nothing wrong with her, like many they stayed in contact and had developed a strong friendship – she still depending on her as if she never passed the trails.

A fragment of their most recent conversation toyed with Senna’s ears and caused her to pause eating… ‘Have you considered it is the will of the Ferce, Senna for you to be here on Coruscant?’… She dropped her fork again, thinking. Why would the force want her to be in this temple? Her gaze trailed around the room again, coming to rest on a group of younglings – it was an important time for them and it showed in everything they did, the way they spoke, their body language. Distracted from her thoughts she smiled again, watching a few trying to impress the older Jedi by sitting with them and trying to engage in adult conversation. She wondered idly as she chewed what kind of padawan she would end up with one day, not that she would consider it now, she had too much to learn herself – after all she’d only been a Jedi Knight for a few incredibly short years, what could she possibly pass onto the young?

She swallowed sharply in surprise as a wide brimmed hat passed by her table, for a moment she could have sworn it was moving on its own or floating. Of course that wasn’t the case at all as she watched a tiny youngling came around the side of the table and headed to the service droid, Senna chuckled to herself for her surprise and watched him pass – there was something familiar about this youngling. In a flash a montage of memories crossed her vision, a tiny Jawa tugging on her robes speaking in broken basic but always seemed so happy to see her.

“Tinki?”

"Tinki?"

Through all of the noise in the canteen, through all of the thoughts in his muddled head, the voice came. A voice he had known for many years and had drawn him across the room countless times when he was younger, seeking the woman to whom the voice belonged. The voice reminded him of the bright sun and hot sands of his home world, the safety and protection that she had given in escorting him back to the Temple, and most importantly, of the lady herself.

He spun quickly, too quickly, and for a moment tottered on one thin leg. Wide, golden eyes shone out from the darkness nestled under the brim of the hat, locking onto the woman that had spoken his name. Despite the fact that she had given up her padawan braid many years ago, he could almost see it hanging. The eyes that held such wisdom, such kindness, and in this instance, such surprise. And those lovely little lips that gave birth to that wonderful, magical voice, dressed in one of the loveliest smiles. In his excitement, he raced the few short steps to her. Hands covered in soft, downy fur and tipped with tiny claws reach out to grab the edge of her robe, to tug, as he gazed up at her. His voice, high pitched and full of excitement.

"Senna?"

PostSubject: Re: A big day for a little Jawa.   A big day for a little Jawa. I_icon_minitimeMon Feb 20, 2012 11:18 pm

She was perfectly elated to see him, after all she’d had just been reminiscing and suddenly here he was, like he had popped right out of her memories to scuttle past her table. At the faint familiar tugging on her robes Senna acted unconsciously. Without a thought of propriety or that the little Jawa was older now and perhaps preferred not to be handled the way she used too when he was little, she instantly picked the youngling up off his feet and placed him to sit on the table before her before wrapping him up in a soft hug. “Tinki! It is you.”

She sat back after a moment and looked him over, marvelling at how he’d changed so much yet so little in the years since she had seen him. It seemed a miracle yet completely natural that they’d bumped into one another again, here of all places that they called home. “Look at you! You’re all grown up.” Her tone was soft, full of affection and a warmth she’d only ever reserved for the Jawa, “It only seems like yesterday…”

Yesterday, when she’d first met Tinki – she’d taken to him right away, the little one of the group who couldn’t speak their language and was avoided by the other children. She’d taken special care to look after him on that trip back to Coruscant, after when they arrived she imaged he would forget her in a flash with all the excitement that follows when you first start learning about the Force but she’d been wrong. He’d always been there, tugging on her robes, Oh! She remembered how proud she was of him the day he first used the Force to levitate a spoon.

Her smile softened again and tenderly she caressed his head through his hat, now was not the time for being melancholy so she shook it off easily and addressed him once more, “What’s news Tinki? You’d be about the right age now. Have you been chosen by a Master yet?”

The moment he felt the familiar touch of her hands upon him, he knew where he was going. By Jawa standards, he was a strapping young lad, but as the Jawa are a race of diminutive, slender rodent people, he was still very light. When full grown, he may just reach the weight of a human child. Maybe. He was chattering already, slipping into the language he was born to almost without thinking. The moment he was seated on her table, his feet were dangling and swinging rhythmically, and as she hugged him, his own arms gently snaked around her sides in return. As she pulled back, he realised the language he spoke in, and quickly quietened himself. Her hand ruffled his hat, and he could not suppress a grin.

"No Master," he said quickly in his high pitched voice, speaking Basic now. "Not worried. Much for Tinki to learn still, no rush to leave." He looked around the room slowly, and then leaned closer towards her. "All Younglings dressed to impress. Tinki does not stand out. Tinki does not mind. Masters tall, gruff, quiet." His shoulders rose and fell once more quickly. "What is news with Senna? Seen much of the galaxy? Seen Tatooine?" As much as the Temple was now Tinki's home, he always recalled the deserts of his home with a gentle fondness. Despite the fact that he loved his Temple, and was in no rush to leave, he would love to set his eyes on the suns of his home world once more.

"Many adventures Senna has had, yes yes? Tell Tinki?" He settled into his position on her table, golden eyes peering into her own, eager to hear what she had to tell him. His Basic was better now, and despite the fact that he knew he was not speaking perfectly, he could not help it. When he was excited, he slipped back into his old ways of speaking.

Senna followed Tinki’s gaze about the room as he eyed off the other younglings and spoke with such a profound wisdom. It made her wondered why no one had chosen him yet, he was bright, eager, caring – everything a padawan should be. It confused her, yes, the other younglings were all showing off their particular talents but to her, Tinki was standing out the most simply because he was not trying to be anything but himself. He was not desperate to move forward but rather to trust the Force to guide his training. So, what was it then? Perhaps the other Jedi were nervous about taking on a padawan who came from a background so different then anyone else, a youngling who since first stepped into the hall seemed to be isolated simply because he didn’t rush about like other children, speak Basic and tinkered with droids.

She kept her thoughts to herself though, no need to bother the little Jawa with her concerns for his future, and instead she rubbed her cheek and nodded. “I may have had one or two.” Her laughter was easy again as she tilted her head and thought over the last few years of her life, to her it all seemed rather mundane but to Tinki who didn’t get a chance to leave the temple it must have seemed so exciting. It was ironic really, her own Master must have been thinking the same thing when she spoke of her own ‘adventures’ to Senna but back then it all seemed so impossibly big and exciting so she did her best to accommodate the Jawa now. “Um… I’ve been back to Tatooine once or twice. I saw a swoop race there and had a meeting with a crime lord. I had to negotiate with him to allow medical supplies to through to the people in his claimed territory. He wanted to take half as compensation but I told him that was not on. He set his personal guard on me after that but I managed to subdue them, get a testimony and evidence from them which allowed me to arrest him. Long story short he came back here for trail and the medicine went through.”

She smiled and ducked her head feeling a little silly to be describing the things she had done, they were not grand or important like the other older Jedi. She swallowed and changed tact, trying to shift the focus back on him again, “But Tinki, you should know not all Masters are like that,” she chuckled, “I mean, if I were your Master you wouldn’t think that about me, would you?” Her laughter trailed off slightly, she’s surprised herself by suggesting she’d teach him so easily. She’d never considered taking on a padawan before, she never thought herself ready but there it was out in the open now with no way to take it back.

He practically bounced as he sat on her table, his golden eyes locked to her, hanging on her every word. He had found Senna fascinating since they had first met, and her tales were just as thrilling now. He could almost picture the swoop race, or hear the hideous laugh of the vile Hutt. He hoped that one day he would be out there too, having adventures and serving the Republic, just like Senna. He laughed when she laughed, and smiled when she smiled. Everything seemed to easy with Senna, unlike with other Jedi. She accepted him exactly as he was; high pitched voice, odd speech patterns and interesting hobbies.

“I mean, if I were your Master you wouldn’t think that about me, would you?”

For a moment, the little Jawa's heart skipped a beat. He knew that Basic was not his best language, but to his young ears, that had sounded almost like... an offer? "Senna. Senna Master?" His large, golden eyes blinked slowly, several times in succession. Had she offered? The word 'if' had been quite prominent in the sentence. Maybe he had been mistaken? "No no, Senna Master not gruff, not quiet." He paused for a moment, his voice hesitant. "Still tall though. Much taller than Tinki."

There is no emotion, there is peace. Tinki continued to remind himself of this tenant of the Jedi code as he tried to calm down. Senna had not offered to be his Master, that had been wishful thinking on his behalf. But how perfect would that have been?

She blinked as Tinki blinked. She hesitated as Tinki did. His mind was probably rushing with thoughts exactly the same as hers was. A silence stretched between them for what seemed like eternity but in reality it had only been a couple of seconds. Her eyes flicked up unconsciously and across the canteen she saw her old Master sitting at a table with some younglings her gaze trained right back on Senna. They hadn’t needed words to speak, not for a long time and now Senna communicated perfectly and she knew her Master understood. She blinked again, her Master raised a brow as if to say ‘well?’ - ‘Have you considered it is the will of the Ferce, Senna for you to be here on Coruscant?’.

She swallowed, the moment ended and she was looking back at Tinki. Truth was, she couldn’t deny how… right it felt, the thought of Tinki becoming her padawan. There wasn’t a single reason she could bring to mind that could counterbalance that feeling. It was as if suddenly someone had opened the window to let the sun in and she could see clearly – this was why she was drawn to Coruscant time and again but would Tinki see it that way?

“Well…” She began hesitantly, chewing her bottom lip faintly before proceeding, “I am taller… but would that bother you? I know… I mean, I know I am not as experienced as some of the other Jedi and to be honest I don’t even know how to teach a padawan but… would you, maybe consider it?”

She blinked again, surely Tinki would politely turn her down any moment now. Yes, the Jawa was fond of her but when it came to teaching, well, she was seriously lacking in experience and he probably wanted someone confident in what they knew and could pass onto a student, someone who could be a role model and wise, someone experienced and knowledgeable. Senna felt like she was none of those things, after all, hadn’t she just blundered her way about asking him to be her padawan, the poor Jawa probably had no idea she was even offering. She always convinced herself that the aforementioned attributes would one day just suddenly kick in and everything would be fine but maybe this was just something every Jedi Knight felt the first time they took an apprentice. Her eyes flicked to her Master again and instantly felt bowed by the encouraging smile she received in turn, gathering her courage she asked again - definitively, “Would you consider being my padawan, Tinki?”

The tale of the flying, chattering Jawa Jedi would resound around the canteen of the Temple for many years to come, and this was the moment that it began. Later, they would tell Tinki that the moment Senna had asked him, he had screamed in delight and leaped at her, that they would tumble to the floor together, and that somehow, through it all, Tinki would remain latched in a tight hug around her neck jabbering away in Jawaese. They will tell him this entirely because, in his excitement, Tinki had no idea what he was doing. The moment she had asked, he had lost all reason and reacted on pure instinct, pure joy.

When he came to his senses, he blinked slowly. Senna was still on the floor, laughing, and Tinki was still atop her. Probably not the best place to be. He rolled off of her quickly, and moved to help her up as well. "What Tinki means to say..." he starts, glad that his broad hat kept his face hidden, "... is that the answer to Senna Master's question is yes." She was his Master! His, and no one elses. The greatest Jedi in all of the galaxy, and she had offered to teach him, of all people. Tinki could not believe his luck!
